the baby and done [did] my housework.SANDY CANADA: Did you do your housework while the baby was asleep?
EDNA CANADA: Well, sometimes I done [did it] while she was awake.
SANDY CANADA: Was she a good baby? ... _
EDNA CANADA: Yeah.
SANDY CANADA: What did you feed your baby?
EDNA CANADA: Well, when they got big enough to feed, they ate at the table what
I ate.SANDY CANADA: Did you breastfeed or bottle feed?
EDNA CANADA: Breastfed her.
SANDY CANADA: How did you know when to wean her?
EDNA CANADA: Well, when she got big enough to eat from the table and feed
herself, why I weaned her.SANDY CANADA: How did you know what to feed her?
EDNA CANADA: I always fed her whatever I ate, nothing bothered her.
SANDY CANADA: How old was she when you started her on solid foods?
EDNA CANADA: Twelve months old.
SANDY CANADA: What did Kids like to eat back then?
EDNA CANADA: Just anything they could get a hold [ahold] of.
SANDY CANADA: Did all of you's [you] eat together, your husband you and your kids?
EDNA CANADA: Yes.
SANDY CANADA: Where [Were] there times when you didn't have enough food?
EDNA CANADA: No, we always had food.
SANDY CANADA: You weren’t back in the Depression, [were] was you?
EDNA CANADA: No
SANDY CANADA: Did you depend on a garden?
EDNA CANADA: Yeah, I raised a garden.
SANDY CANADA: Did you ever use a pacifier or a sugar tit?
EDNA CANADA: No
SANDY CANADA: Where [Were] your babies ever sick?
EDNA CANADA: Yes, they were sick
SANDY CANADA: Did they have any certain illness that you remember?
EDNA CANADA: Uronic fever, asthma.
SANDY CANADA: Did you treat them, or did you take them to a doctor?
EDNA CANADA: Took them to a doctor
SANDY CANADA: Did you use any home remedies or anything?
EDNA CANADA: Yeah, I used home remedies, but I took them to the doctor.
SANDY CANADA: Where were the doctors at?
EDNA CANADA: Williamsburg.
SANDY CANADA: Did they ever have Colic?
EDNA CANADA: Yes.
SANDY CANADA: What did you do for it?
EDNA CANADA: Well, I gave them drops and I went to the doctor and got drops to
give them.SANDY CANADA: What about diaper rash?
EDNA CANADA: No, they never had it real[ly] bad.
SANDY CANADA: Diarrhea?
EDNA CANADA: Not [too] long at a time.
SANDY CANADA: What about colds?
EDNA CANADA: Yeah, they had colds
SANDY CANADA: Infections?
EDNA CANADA: Yeah
SANDY CANADA: Accidents, did they ever break any bones or anything?
EDNA CANADA: No.
SANDY CANADA: Whooping Cough?
EDNA CANADA: No, they had the shots for it
SANDY CANADA: Diphtheria?
EDNA CANADA: No.

EDNA CANADA: No, they never had typhoid.
SANDY CANADA: Well, you said you used home remedies right, did you have any
favorite home remedies that you used?EDNA CANADA: Well, yeah.
SANDY CANADA: What were they?
EDNA CANADA: Cough syrup for them.
SANDY CANADA: How did you make it?
EDNA CANADA: With lemon juice and honey.
SANDY CANADA: Did you have any babies to die as infants?
EDNA CANADA: No, I had a miscarriage
SANDY CANADA: Today, you know, kids have different kinds of toys to play with,
could you tell me what toys your babies had to play with?EDNA CANADA: Doll, cars.
SANDY CANADA: Did you go to the store and buy them, or did you make them?
EDNA CANADA: Well, made them dolls, and bought some.
SANDY CANADA: How did you make the dolls?
EDNA CANADA: I would cut them out of material and sew them and stuff them with cotton.
SANDY CANADA: Did they have [a] rattle when they were? Did you buy them, or did
you make them?EDNA CANADA: No, I didn't buy any rattles as [that] I recall of.
SANDY CANADA: Did you ever make them any?
EDNA CANADA: Yeah, I made them. I took buttons and put them in something [or]
other and they would make a racket with shaking them.SANDY CANADA: Were there nursery rhymes that you’d tell them or songs that you’d
sing them?EDNA CANADA: Yeah.
SANDY CANADA: Could you tel1 me the names of them?
EDNA CANADA: Oh, baby.
SANDY CANADA: Did you read to them?
EDNA CANADA: Read story books to them.
SANDY CANADA: What age was [were] they when you read to them?
EDNA CANADA: All different ages, just from small on up.
SANDY CANADA: Did they enjoy it, was it a nursery book?
EDNA CANADA: Just a book of any kind.
SANDY CANADA: How did you dress your baby?
EDNA CANADA: Well, I sewed part of their clothes.
SANDY CANADA: What about diapers, did you use cloth diapers or pampers?
EDNA CANADA: Cloth diapers.
SANDY CANADA: Did you have any cribs or playpens, walkers, strollers,
highchairs, or anything like that?EDNA CANADA: No.
SANDY CANADA: How did you potty train your babies?
EDNA CANADA: I--just when they got old enough, I'd take their diaper off of them
and hold them out.SANDY CANADA: Did your husband help you any? What role was his? [was his role]
EDNA CANADA: He helped some, he was working away from home, he didn't help too much.
SANDY CANADA: Is there anything else you’d like to tell me about what you did?
EDNA CANADA: No, not that I can recall of.
